Keep Your Dog’s Stomach Happy This Thanksgiving

November 20, 2025 by olewousa Leave a Comment

Thanksgiving is a high-risk day for dogs. There is food everywhere, guests handing out treats, and plates left at perfect snout height. One wrong snack and your celebration can turn into a carpet cleaning marathon you never asked for. The good news is that with a little planning you can keep your dog’s stomach steady and your holiday peaceful.

Foods Your Dog Should Avoid

Some classic Thanksgiving dishes can send your dog straight into trouble. Keep these off limits:

Turkey skin and fatty meat
The spices, butter, and high fat content can trigger pancreatitis or fast, messy dog diarrhea.

Cooked bones
Turkey bones splinter easily. They can cut the digestive tract or cause blockages.

Stuffing
Stuffing often includes onions, garlic, and heavy seasoning. Onions and garlic are toxic to dogs even in smaller amounts.

Gravy
Delicious for humans, a gut punch for dogs. It is usually loaded with fat, salt, and ingredients that cause dog digestive upset.

Desserts
Chocolate, artificial sweeteners like xylitol, raisins, and alcohol are dangerous. Even “safe” desserts contain sugar and butter that irritate a sensitive stomach.

Casseroles and sides
Green bean casserole, creamed corn, candied yams, and anything smothered in butter or spices can send your dog into digestive chaos.

What Your Dog Can Safely Enjoy

You can still share the holiday spirit without hurting your dog’s stomach. Stick with simple, clean foods.

Plain turkey meat
A small portion of unseasoned white meat is safe. Remove the skin and avoid dark meat if your dog has a sensitive stomach.

Steamed or raw vegetables
Green beans, carrots, cucumbers, peas, and broccoli are all dog friendly as long as they are not seasoned.

Plain pumpkin
A spoonful of pure pumpkin (not pie filling) supports healthy digestion.

Sweet potatoes
Serve plain, cooked sweet potato without butter or sugar.

Apple slices
A few slices without seeds are fine. They make a light, crunchy treat.

Set Your Dog Up for Success

A few smart habits can save your Thanksgiving:

  • Feed your dog their normal meal before guests arrive so they are less tempted to beg.

  • Let visitors know not to slip your dog scraps.

  • Keep trash sealed. Dogs can smell through almost anything.

  • Prepare safe treats ahead of time so your dog feels included without risk.

A Natural Way to Keep Digestive Problems Away

Even with the best planning, dogs find trouble. That is why many dog owners keep Olewo Carrots for Dogs on hand.
