Can Dogs Eat Beets?

March 30, 2013 by olewousa Leave a Comment

beets for dogsRed Beets are a nutritional powerhouse and can provide the same great health benefits to dogs than to humans.  They are a great natural remedy for Dog Allergies!

With a variety of vegetables being offered to pets, the miraculous benefits of red beetroot for the health of dogs are still not commonly known.

This is not beet pulp! Olewo Red Beets are made from premium red table beets that are grown for human consumption.

Red Beet Supplement for Dogs

Red Beets are high in nutrients and low in calories.  Red Beets contain an unusual mix of antioxidants and are unique in the way that they get their red color primarily from betalain antioxidant pigments. Coupled with a good source of antioxidant vitamin C and an excellent source of antioxidant manganese, is what makes this vegetable so antioxidant rich. Red beets provide a great source of fiber and are particularly rich in folate, an important B vitamin for a healthy heart and essential for normal tissue growth. Red Beets contain good amounts of iron, potassium, magnesium, and more.

Dartsch Scientific SealDogs actually need some vegetables because they contain many important health-promoting nutrients that are often lacking in commercial pet foods.

Red Beets however were not commonly known as a pet food ingredient, and therefore Olewo had the product verified by a Scientific Lab to document the great, but little known benefits of red beetroot for pets.

Besides the fact that the red beet root vegetable is a powerful antioxidant, and is bursting with vitamins and other vital nutrients to improve your dog’s overall health, there are other beneficial properties to greatly benefit your dog:

Detoxification Properties

Red Beets support the liver’s ability to detoxify and cleanse the dog’s body from toxins which are often the cause of allergies.  These unwanted toxins get passed out instead of being re-absorbed in the dog’s system, providing relief for the itchy dog naturally.  Just like humans, dogs are exposed to external toxins every day, including pollutants, pesticides and chemicals. Other sources of toxins include medications such as steroids, antibiotics, vaccines and even food toxins such as chemical preservatives, additives and coloring. Although a dog’s body is designed to rid itself of these toxins naturally, it can become overburdened. Detoxification offers additional support to expel toxins and minimize weight, which is important to maintain health and vitality.

Anti-Inflammatory Properties

Just like with the human body, inflammation is a necessary part of how the dog’s body recovers from acute trauma and stress, but can lead to many ailments when it persists and becomes chronic. Red Beets are known to help lower the risk of inflammation-driven diseases.  Olewo Dehydrated Red Beets were tested (on cells, not animals!) and verified by a Scientic Lab in Germany to document the benefits, one of which was the anti-inflammatory compounds. There are many unique phytonutrients present in red beets, but in particular the anti-inflammatory activity is demonstrated by betanin.

The Difference between OLEWO RED BEETS and BEET PULP

Beet Pulp for DogsA beet product more commonly known and frequently used as a pet food ingredient is beet pulp.  Beet pulp is a by-product of commercial sugar beet processing.  When sugar is diffused from sugar beets and processed into bagged sugar, the leftover beet pulp is pressed and dried as a by-product.  This fibrous material from sugar beets, which are usually not eaten as a vegetable, is mostly used as a feed source in swine, cattle, sheep and poultry.  It is also used as a less expensive alternative to horse feed, and in recent years has appeared as a common ingredient in dog food.  While beet pulp is generally well tolerated in dogs and provides a source of fiber, it is completely different and does not provide the health-promoting nutrients that are found in the red beet root vegetable!
