Red Beets – The Root of Cleansing and Protection

June 22, 2017 by olewousa Leave a Comment

Red beets, or red beetroot, is touted as one of the healthiest vegetables, and it has to be one of the best things Mother Nature has provided us with.  Not only are beets chock-full of nutrients, they also have healing powers.  Even back to the Middle Ages, red beetroot has been used not just as a food, but also as a medicinal treatment for numerous conditions.

While there are too many benefits to discuss in one article, I would like to focus on two of the primary reasons why every dog should receive a daily dose of red beets – cleansing and protection.

The Root of Cleansing

Cleansing is just as important for dogs as it is for humans because dogs are also exposed to many toxins each day, whether it is environmental, or toxins from food ingredients, toxins in medications – they are everywhere and can wreak havoc on a dog’s body if it is not detoxified.

Common signs that your dog might be suffering from an overload of toxins are constant itching and scratching, paw licking and irritations on the skin.  Toxins can cause more serious health problems, but the skin is the largest organ, and very sensitive, which is why signs of trouble usually show up on the skin first.

There is no better way than to help your dog’s body detoxify naturally, with a daily dose of red beets.

The liver is a major detox organ and therefore it is important to keep it healthy so it can perform its functions.  Red beets contain calcium, betaine, B vitamins, iron, and antioxidants, which make them one of the best liver foods.  Red beets also thin the bile so it can easily flow through the liver and small intestine, which further enhances liver health.

The betaine in red beets help the liver to eliminate toxins, and the beet fiber clears the toxins that have been removed from the liver, making sure they don’t reenter the body.

In addition, red beets contain zinc and copper, both of which can protect the liver cells from oxidative stress.

The Root of Protection

Red beets can help protect a dog’s health because of its anti-inflammatory compounds and powerful antioxidants.

The anti-inflammatory compounds found in red beets inhibit the activity of an enzyme, which the body uses to trigger inflammation.  While some inflammation is normal and necessary, too much inflammation is a big concern.  Reduced levels of inflammation help nearly every system in the body and help fight off diseases.

The average dog’s diet is very high in inflammatory properties from processed foods, high amounts of sugar (it’s not on the pet food label, but it is in the food), and low amounts of nutrients.  Adding a daily dose of red beets to your dog’s diet is an excellent way to keep inflammation down.

Red Beets contain a unique antioxidant combination including betalains.  Studies have shown that betalains help to protect the body from developing certain cancers and many other illnesses too.

In his book “The World’s Healthiest Foods, George Mateljan talks about red beets and their suggested role as cancer-protective food.  He mentions how in one study, liver antioxidant enzymes increased in laboratory animals that were fed beet fiber.  Since these enzymes protect the liver from free radicals, they are thought to prevent the beginnings of cancerous activity.  In another study, scientists noted that animals fed beet fiber had an increase in their number of large intestine CD8 cells, special immune cells that detect and eliminate abnormal cells and protect animals against precancerous cellular abnormalities.
